    Round, The Fifth

Mediator:  Welcome to the fifth round of this debate.  This round will focus on the divine unity.  There will
be one question.

I put before you the question: is God one?

Popular Party:  It seems that God is not one.  Firstly, 1 Corinthians 8:5 says, “For there be many gods and
many lords.”  If there are many Gods, then God is not alone.

Secondly, “one” is a number, a unit of measurement.  And a unit of measurement can only be applied to the
physical; as God is not physical, it is not possible to label Him as one of anything.

Aquinas:  Deuteronomy says, “Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord.”

God, as was said earlier, is simple.  Therefore He must be singular; if there were many Gods, He would be
complex.  You may have many men, but you can only have one Socrates.  Likewise God is unique and
singular.

If many gods existed, they must somehow differ from each other.  But if this is true, they would all lack
something, making them imperfect.  As the definition of God has to include perfection and being the source of
all things at once, there could not be other gods.

Firstly, many people refer to “gods” in the plural, but this is in error.  Some people worshipped the stars and
planets as if they were deities.  In Corinthians, it is added that “Our God is one.”

Secondly, the human mind is unable to comprehend the whole of God, but can only comprehend Him in the
abstract.  It is therefore possible for man to think of God as “one” because that number is being applied to the
limited God which is all that we can fathom.

Question One, complete.  End of Round Five.
